As a boy Mei Lanfang learned his first arias while counting copper coins, trained the famous “phoenix-eye” gaze by following pigeons across the sky, and sweated through every stance and flip demanded by his master.
Years later, now a star, he created dazzling new plays that made traditional Peking Opera brighter, faster, and irresistible to modern audiences.
When he sailed to America, performances of “The Heavenly Maiden Scatters Flowers” and “Farewell My Concubine” showed the world how beautiful Chinese opera could be.
During the War of Resistance, Japanese officers again and again ordered him to sing for the occupation; Mei stopped shaving and grew a beard, refusing to let his art serve the invaders.
Told in finely detailed, realistic art, this book traces Mei Lanfang’s legendary journey—from small boy to master of Peking Opera.

2025 少年時代、梅蘭芳は銅貨を数えながらアリアを学び、空を飛ぶ鳩を追いかけて有名な「鳳凰の目」を訓練し、師匠に要求されるあらゆる構えや回転に汗水流しました。
数年後、スターとなった彼は、伝統的な京劇をより鮮やかに、より速く、そして現代の観客を魅了する、まばゆいばかりの新作を創作しました。
アメリカへ航海に出た後、『天女散花』と『さらば、わが愛』を上演し、中国オペラの美しさを世界に示しました。
抗日戦争中、日本軍将校は彼に占領軍のために歌うよう何度も命じました。梅蘭芳は髭を剃るのをやめ、髭を生やした。自分の芸術が侵略者に利用されることを拒んだのだ。
本書は、精緻で写実的な描写で綴られ、幼い少年から京劇の達人へと成長した梅蘭芳の伝説的な道のりを辿る。

精緻な描写力と安定した構成力がすばらしい作品でした。
人物表現の確かさや舞台空間の描き込みには強い説得力があり、ページを重ねるごとに物語の重みが伝わってくる点が印象的でした。 伝記という題材でありながら、歴史的背景や人物の成長を視覚的に丁寧に描き切っており、絵本としての完成度の高さを感じました。
確かな技術に裏打ちされた表現力が光る、力強い出版作品だと思います。

This was a wonderful work, with precise depiction and stable composition.
The precision of the character portrayals and the detailed depiction of the stage space were very convincing, and it was impressive how the weight of the story came across with each passing page.
Although the subject matter is a biography, the historical background and the characters' growth are visually and carefully depicted, and I felt it was a highly polished picture book.
I think this is a powerful publication, with expressive power backed by solid technique.

初見ですぐにその表現力の豊かさ、カラーまたは単色でも意図したものを描く力に目を奪われました。
間の取り方、レイアウトさえイラスト自体をより映えさ、素晴らしいと思います。
舞台となった時代背景、主人公の葛藤、意志が描き切られて、描きこむこととあえて削ぎ落とす間の使い方といい拍手を送ります。

At first glance, I was immediately struck by the richness of its expressiveness, its ability to portray what is intended, whether in color or monochrome.
The spacing and even the layout make the illustration itself stand out even more, and I think it's wonderful.
The historical background of the setting, the protagonist's conflict, and his resolve are all fully depicted, and I applaud the way he uses both detail and deliberate sparing space.

中国オペラを実際に拝見したり読んだりしたことはないのですが、こちらの繊細な京劇の描写、同じアジアの文化に通じる美しさや、戦時下の切なさが深く伝わってまいりました。
透き通るようなイラストの表現から、奥ゆかしく気品ある世界観を感じ、心を打たれました。

Although I have never actually seen or read Chinese opera, I was deeply touched by the delicate depictions of Peking opera, the beauty common to Asian cultures, and the sadness of wartime.
The clear illustrations conveyed a profound and elegant worldview that really struck me.

The beautifully detailed depictions are captivating.
The background colors seem to convey the emotions of the characters.
War takes the lives of many people, and even those who survive leave deep scars in their hearts.
I hope that this picture book will help people realize just how foolish war is.
